Interlude 1 00:43
Well first of all Sir John A MacDonald wanted to kill the Métis off. For him, we were to be treated as whites. He used those words. People in Ottawa they didn’t know who the Métis people were, people in Ontario thought we’d long gone with the buffalo. So the federal government and Indian Affairs wanted to erase the memory and the knowledge of the Métis people, because the Ontario government figured these Indians were supposed to die off .The numbers are supposed to go down, they’re not supposed to go up.

100 Years 03:41
Only two roads out of this town Break free or they’ll break you down Did the blood stain your crown When you carried us away Young bodies buried in the ground Will you finally listen now? (To) generations crying out Done waiting for the day Can you feel the heat Underneath your feet Rising on the land, stirring in the street Waking from a hundred years of sleep A hundred years of sleep A hundred years of sleep There’s a strange light in our eyes And we’re done with compromise All your silence and your lies Can’t take this truth away So what’s it gonna take Can you feel the heat Underneath your feet Rising on the land, stirring in the street Waking from a hundred years of sleep A hundred years of sleep A hundred years of sleep A whole life lived complacent Everything given, wasted Taking taking taking Hands are never clean It’s time for returning The seventh fire’s burning Painted skies you’ve never seen…never seen Can you feel the heat Underneath your feet Rising on the land, stirring in the street Waking from a hundred years of sleep A hundred years of sleep A hundred years of sleep

Look where we are Got scars in the sky We’re working too hard While the temperatures rise We’re ignoring The world, while the fires are roaring… Take a good look around Look what they’ve done Taken innocent lives with systematic guns It’s control in the name of power and glory It takes the death of a dream To wake up and see A world with a little more room to breathe So lets gather and sing For the death of the American dream Look where we are Got lines in the sand Building up empires on stolen land By exploiting Hearts and bodies and stories… It takes the death of a dream To wake up and see A world with a little more room to breathe So lets gather and sing For the death of the American dream Look where we are The waters are clean We lead with our hearts We don’t take more than we need We’re restoring A world we can all feel joy in It took the death of a dream To wake up and see A world with a little more room to breathe So lets gather and sing For a brand new American dream Let’s all gather and sing For a brand new American Dream

Interlude 2 00:54
Well the government never referred to us as Métis, they referred to us as Half Breeds. At one point Métis people were part of the treaties, and they were kicked off because they were half breeds. And they said, they should go and live as whites. It’s so entrenched. The discrimination… is so entrenched. I don’t know if it will ever go away, but because of this denial, this genocidal attitude of governments, from Sir John A. Macdonald and on, and Ontario in particular, governments have never wanted to recognize us.

Do About Her 03:33
She’s not quite an Indian Girl Not quite a white girl either Got her hands out to both worlds we gonna do about her She’s not quite an Indian Girl She’s not quite a white girl either Got her hands out to both worlds What we gonna do about her Put a bullet or a blanket out for her Come and get a look, it’s a half breed girl Pretty quill boots and prettier curls Bow and arrow sharp, crisp white shirt Living off the earth She’s not quite an Indian Girl She’s not quite a white girl either Her heart beats in both worlds What we gonna do about her Put a bullet or a blanket out for her What we gonna do about her She’s not quite an Indian Girl She’s not quite a white girl either Got a fire burnin in both worlds What we gonna do about her Put a blade or a plate out for her What we gonna do about her Put a bullet or a blanket out for her She’s been this way her whole life Carrying what some refuse She’s always enough, and never too much Her stride crosses centuries (still you say she’s…) She’s not a real Indian Girl She’s not quite a white girl either Her heart lives in both worlds What we gonna do about her Put a bullet or a blanket out for her What we gonna do about her What we gonna do……..to her

Maybe You Do 03:52
Always thought No one would ever love me You showed up and ya just won’t go away Ya I’m really good at dreaming up the worst case Always listening for your voice to change What if, what if, what if, oh I worry You say I’m safe You say we’re fine I believe you most of the time But if I’m honest I can’t promise I won’t burn us down I’m working on it, but I get caught in the lies I tell myself Learning that my scars don’t tell truth But maybe you do. Ain’t it funny how much you love the silence Cuz when it’s quiet, all my doubts will fill the room Even when the sun is brightly shining I’ll focus on the one cloud in the blue What if, what if, what if, I don’t worry You say I’m safe You say we’re fine I believe you most of the time But if I’m honest I can’t promise I won’t burn us down I’m working on it, but I get caught in the lies I tell myself Learning that my scars don’t tell truth But maybe you do. There are times when I’m still terrified Of it all falling down, of losing my ground But when you say I’m safe, when you say I’m fine I’ll believe you, I’ll believe you…. But if I’m honest I can’t promise I won’t burn us down I’m working on it, but I get caught in the lies I tell myself Learning that my scars don’t tell truth Learning that my scars don’t tell truth But maybe you do

This Love 03:46
You were sang into the world As the stars danced above Start your journey ahead Fuelled by centuries of love At times the water will rise Or sink down low The road might get rough But remember this love… Hmmm If you get quiet enough Standing where others have stood, A gentle voice will remind you That your heart is good Carried in the wind And the gentle falling snow Let it surround you As you walk on you road This space doesn’t need a name Come as you are, You’re never far away This love That carried you in, holds your hand and beats within In your bones, and in your blood….. Ooooooh Remember this love Each one of us, a spark of the All Spirit If you slow down enough, you will feel it This love… This love carried you in, holds your hand and beats within In your bones, and in your blood….. Ooooooh Remember this love This love

Interlude 3 00:51
So you’ve got all kinds of people, children, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, today, who know nothing about the historic relationship that existed between our peoples. There just has not been that history of relationships.. The relationship was broken generations ago. The division was installed it was solidified, the prejudices were built up, against the Métis people, amongst First Nations. We’ve had generations of that, a very sad situation. So there is a great suspicion.

Come sit my child, Can you smell the fire? Come and be with me, Leave all your worries behind Before all the greed and the lies, We lived the good life We were free, We did more than survive My great granddaughter... There’s Mushkiki here for you All the bricks and the mortar Can’t break your Spirit… You are the blood of my mother I believe in you…. I see the light in your eyes, I know you will find Your way, with a good heart, And a good mind There’ll be some hard times, People will be unkind When you need me, I’ll be (right) by your side. My great granddaughter... There’s Mushkiki here for you All the bricks and the mortar Can’t break your Spirit… You are the blood of my mother I believe in you…. I believe in you…. Come sit my child Tell me what’s on your mind… You know… I’m counting on you To light that final fire My great granddaughter... There’s Mushkiki here for you All the bricks and the mortar Can’t break your Spirit… You are the blood of my mother I believe in you…. I believe in you…. I believe in you…. I believe in you….

I used to give it all away All the beauty I was holding Never where I was supposed to be Feeling what I had was stolen There’s an ember, Not a fire Gonna feed it, Till it’s Higher Till it turns it into a flame Make it easier on me Finally I see I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be All the pressure and the pain Always got me where I’m going When I take it all away There’s a garden that is growing… There’s an ember, Not a fire Gonna feed it Till it’s Higher Till it Turns it into a flame Make it easier on me Finally I see I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be Finally I see I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be I don’t need to start again No coulda shoulda would been No beginning and no end As without is as within Finally I see and I’m listening Till it Turns it into a flame Make it easier on me Finally I see I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be Finally I see I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be

Interlude 4 00:39
It's just a matter of education, you know. Getting people to understand that Métis are a people, they come from communities. They have ancestors who are Métis. They don’t have ancestors who are Indian and white. They have ancestors that are Métis. Those are our ancestors, they are a people, those are the people that we come from. Do you come from a Métis community who are your people who will bury you, where do you come from, nothing to do with blood quantum.

In between and out of place It’s hard to tell When you see my face My spirit bleeds, and my heart aches Where’s my home and will I find my way? Where is the bridge between… All sides of me I’ve between and out of place I never learned how to pray When I look around, I don’t feel the same I dream of life In a different way When can I let you see...All sides of me Will I lose it all Will you all be gone If i do or don't, I’m damned Will I Ever be enough For you, just as I am. In between and out of place it’s hard to tell when you see my face I refuse and I can’t erase This ishkode burning in my veins I will let you let you see...All sides of me I will let you let you see...All sides of me

about

Amanda Rheaume explores Métis history on 'The Spaces in Between'.

Throughout the album, spoken word interludes by Métis leader Tony Belcourt inform and expand upon the album’s themes. Rheaume introduced Belcourt’s contribution to the project with this trailer, released alongside “100 Years.” Amidst songs that explore Rheaume’s personal experience and perspective of identity, Belcourt’s statements ground and expand upon the album’s exploration and reckoning with the past and present.

“The interludes tell parts of the Métis history and experience,” Rheaume notes. “To me, we need to go back to the old ways, to our teachings, to understand where we are now. The Métis experience is often under-represented. It is my hope that this album and the interludes can shine a light on the complexities of mixed identity and offer comfort and belonging to anyone struggling to find and celebrate their place.

The Spaces In Between was produced and mixed by Hill Kourkoutis, recently nominated for JUNO Award Recording Engineer of the Year. Released via Ishkōdé Records.
